Not Ugly at All

I wanted to try Fatfree Vegan Kitchen's Miang Kum Rolls. Since Susan's daughter E ate them, I figured Princess might too (bland toppings only). I made them as raw as I could, using raw cashews instead of peanuts.

The sauce was really tasty, once you warm up to the idea that it's not peanut sauce, but tamarind flavoured. Princess was excited by the wrap-assembly process, so I was optimistic that she would eat the one she made. Alas, she picked out the spinach and only ate the cucumber and rice paper. But Pete and I really liked them.

We have been eating bushels of fruit lately, so to increase our dietary variety, we decided to try an "uglifruit". Here's what it looked like.

Inside, we were pleasantly surprised, despite the name.

They were very juicy with large wedges the size of grapefruit, but the taste was somewhere between an orange and a grapefruit, with a hint of lime. We ate it like an orange. I would definitely not hesitate to buy one again.

Oh I love ugli fruits! I've never had a green one though, normally they're more brownish, but I find the more brown they are, the more flavouful :)

Where'd you find that 'ugly' thing? I can't remember seeing that at Loblaws before...

Oh no, not Loblaws - we're boycotting them. Farmboy.

I have never seen an ugli fruit. They look yummy! They do not have them in any of whole foods around here. Bummer.

Hi, I stumbled across your blog. I can't believe you're in Nepean. I too live in Nepean. It's neat to read your posts and read about places that I'm familiar with.
I often read blogs of people who are based in the US so I can't get the products they refer to. This is a pleasant surprise.
I've bookmarked your blog and look forward to reading more.
By the way, why did you boycot Loblaws? They have such a great organic section. Sometimes the organic produce is sketchy. I love Farm Boy.

Sweet Pea - Glad to hear you live around here! I described what bothered me about Loblaws here. We're trying to minimize what we buy there and support more local businesses.

Our family loveloveloves ugli fruit....they're hard to find in Nova Scotia, so when we do stumble across them, it's a real treat! They're so juicy you almost need a plate under your face when you bite into them.

is it really called the uglifruit? What a fitting name indeed. It looks tiny bit like something we Thais call 'Som O'
